The Nomination for Smart Downloading of Multimedia by Jing Cheng and Hilde Hasli

I hereby nominate ms. Jing Cheng and ms. Hilde Hasli to the SAIS Best AI Master's Thesis 2001 award. Their thesis "Smart Downloading of Multimedia" was successfully defended at Stockholm University, Department of Computer & Systems Sciences, in June 2001.

I supervised their work, and they also benefited from having an active external supervisor at Ericsson Research: Theo Kanter, in the Wireless Applications lab. Ericsson were very pleased with the thesis work, and both students were permanently employed, in spite of the tough climate for new employments at the company in 2001.

The main reason for my nomination is that their results were at least six months ahead of the competition. Given the activity in the area of combining AI with wireless applications, this is no small feat. Given the luxury of hindsight, I may also note that they were right in virtually all of their conclusions. Today, readers would probably categorise the work as being on intelligent roaming. Nine months ago, that term did not even exist.
